IPL (Laser) and RF Hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation
IPL/Hair Removal Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Laser Hair Removal Involve?
Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems use powerful light sources to offer a long-term solution to unwanted body hair. There are a wide variety of different laser/IPL machines which all work in different ways, however the principle is the same: delivering a strong burst of light into the hair follicle to damage it and prevent future hair growth. Lasers and IPL can be used to treat unwanted hair on most areas of the face and body in men and women. Some skin types (such as very dark or tanned skin), and certain hair types (including red and grey hair), may not be suitable for this treatment. Treatment will cost anywhere between R100 and R2000 per session, depending on the size of the area being treated. Am I a Candidate? Ideal candidates for laser hair removal are those who wish to permanently remove hair on a specific area of the body. What is expected of me before my treatment? Your first discussion with a practitioner should clearly set out your expectations of the treatment so that you can find out whether the results you desire are achievable using this method of hair removal. You may not wax, tweeze or use a hair removal cream for at least 4 weeks prior to your first appointment, as this will reduce the success of your first treatment. Please shave the area about 3 days before treatment, so that the follicle is targeted, rather than the hair itself. Try to ensure that the area is clean and free from deodorant or other products. What can I expect during the treatment? During laser hair removal treatment, safety goggles will be placed over your eyes to protect them from excess light. Our machine has a built in cooling system, which keeps the laser cool therefore a cooling product is not needed. We will apply a conductive gel to the area and then once the correct filter has been chosen, the practitioner will use a small handpiece to administer flashes of light to your skin. Most patients describe the procedure as completely comfortable, some may experience a slight tingling or warm sensation. Several treatments are required for laser hair removal due to the natural growth cycle of hair. It is best to catch the hair follicle early in the growing phase to maximise results. The procedure can take from 10-60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Treatments can be repeated at monthly intervals for 6-8 treatments until the desired results are achieved. The number of IPL treatments depends on factors including the patient’s skin type, hair colour, and density and location of hair. Top up treatments can be done if necessary after this for any stray hairs that come through. What can I expect after my treatment? The procedure will typically destroy between 60-90% of actively growing hairs at each treatment. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light, which means that it is appropriate for treating a wide range of hair colours and skin types. Only hairs that are in their growing phase are susceptible to the treatment, therefore a series of multiple treatments is usually required to effect long-lasting hair growth reduction. Is there a recovery period required? Laser hair removal is not invasive so most people find that they can return to work immediately after treatment. The most you may notice is some redness in the area, but this is usually gone very quickly. What is expected of me after my treatment? You are required to avoid the sun whenever possible and wear sunscreen at all times. Do not pluck, wax or use hair removal cream between treatments. Shave only. Avoid heavy exercise, steam rooms or saunas for 24 hours. |
